Wrap Removal

Old vinyl, graphics and adhesive residue are removed carefully to protect paintwork and speed up a clean refresh or resale. Our wrap removal service suits private cars, bakkies and fleet vehicles across Johannesburg and at our wrap bays nationwide.

What wrap removal covers

Wrap removal is more than peeling off vinyl and calling it done. We remove colour-change film, printed graphics, partial decals, fleet markings, contour cuts, window vinyl and most adhesive residue from painted panels, gloss plastics and wrapped trims. If the vehicle has been through sun, coastal humidity or years of daily use in Gauteng traffic, we adjust the removal method to suit the age and condition of the film.

For businesses, this is often the first step before a livery change, lease return, trade-in, or a full respray. For private owners, it is the quickest way to take a vehicle back to its original look without damaging the finish underneath. Where panels have weak clear coat, accident repair, or old aftermarket paint, we inspect first and flag the risk before work starts.

Our removal process on site

Each job starts with a check of the wrap type, install quality, paint condition and any areas where the film has baked in from sun exposure. We then plan the strip by panel, so we can control heat and avoid tearing the film into small pieces. On older wraps, the adhesive can become brittle, so we use a slower process and lift edges with care rather than forcing it.

  • Initial inspection of film age, edge lift and paint condition
  • Controlled heat application to soften adhesive without cooking the panel
  • Careful lift and peel removal in sections
  • Adhesive breakdown and residue cleaning
  • Final wipe-down and surface check before handover

We keep the work area clean and dry, which matters when panels have dust from site work or road grime from long distance fleet use. The aim is a clean panel with no sticky patches, no vinyl strings and no unnecessary marks left behind.

When wrap removal needs extra care

Some vehicles come in easy, others fight back. Older films, especially those left on for five years or more, can leave more residue and may break apart during lifting. In summer heat, panels can hold high surface temperatures and that changes how fast the adhesive releases. On coastal vehicles, salt air can work its way into seams and create edge failure, while inland vehicles often suffer from harsh sun and dust build-up.

We are especially careful with repainted panels, matte finishes, plastic bumpers and areas where a poor wrap install may have trapped moisture. In those cases, we do not rush the removal just to finish faster. A steady strip is safer for the finish and gives the best base for a new wrap or a polish before resale.

Turnaround times and job planning

Small decal removals can often be completed the same day, while full vehicle wrap removals usually take longer depending on film age, panel count and residue levels. A sedan or hatch with a recent colour-change wrap may take one working day, while a full fleet of bakkies or panel vans can run over several days if vehicles need staggered booking. For larger commercial jobs, we schedule removal so business disruption stays low.

If the vehicle is going straight into a new wrap, tint job or resale detail, we can plan the sequence with the next step in mind. That saves time and avoids a second round of cleaning. For fleet clients, we also work around dispatch times and load-shedding windows so vehicles are not stranded in the yard at the wrong moment.

Pricing approach for wrap stripping

Wrap removal pricing depends on vehicle size, film type, installation age and the amount of adhesive left behind. A fresh install is normally quicker to strip than a wrap that has cooked through several summers, and printed graphics with heavy laminate can take longer than a plain colour-change film. If the job includes badge removal, glue cleanup or panel preparation for repainting, that is priced separately and clearly up front.

  • Vehicle size: hatch, sedan, SUV, bakkie, van or truck cab
  • Wrap condition: recent install, aged film, cracked film or sun-baked edges
  • Scope: full removal, partial removal or branding strip only
  • Finish required: basic clean off, resale prep or paint-ready surface

We quote on the actual condition of the vehicle, not a one-size-fits-all rate. That gives businesses a fair cost per unit and helps private owners budget properly before a sale or refresh.

Aftercare once the film is off

Once the wrap is removed, the paint may need a light clean or polish to bring the finish back evenly. We can advise on the right waiting period before a new wrap, especially if the vehicle has spent years under direct sun or has had fresh paint repairs. In many cases, the surface can be ready for the next stage immediately after cleaning, but a weak clear coat or recent respray may need extra curing time.

For vehicles returning to service, we recommend a quick inspection after the first few washes to check for leftover adhesive at panel edges, door shuts or around mirror bases. If residue returns after a hot day, it usually means a small amount of glue is still soft beneath the surface and can be wiped away before it hardens again.

  • Wash gently for the first 48 hours after removal
  • Avoid harsh solvent cleaners on fresh paint
  • Check door seams, handles and fuel flap edges for residue
  • Book a light polish if the panel finish looks uneven

Questions we get asked

Will wrap removal damage the paint?

Not when the paint is sound and the film was installed properly. We remove carefully with controlled heat and check for weak clear coat or old repair work before starting.

How much adhesive residue is normal after removal?

That depends on the age of the wrap. Fresh films usually leave very little, while older sun-baked wraps can leave more glue on edges and around curves.

Can you remove only part of a wrap?

Yes. We can strip selected panels, doors, roof sections, branding decals or all graphics while leaving the rest in place if that suits the next step.
