Randburg Plumber Fleet

Auto Wrap SA handled a coordinated branding rollout for a Randburg plumbing fleet working across the northern suburbs. The job covered multiple callout bakkies, with a focus on clear branding, practical protection and a finish that could handle daily road use.

A Fleet That Needed To Be Seen In Traffic

The client was a plumbing contractor based in Randburg, serving homes, estates and small commercial sites across the northern suburbs. Their vehicles were on the road early, often in stop-start traffic and parking in tight spaces, so the brief was simple: make every bakkie easy to identify at a glance, while keeping the finish practical for hard work.

The fleet included single cabs and double cabs used for callouts, parts runs and supervision. We worked from one core layout so the brand stayed consistent across all vehicles, even though each bakkie had a slightly different body shape and ladder rack setup. The owner wanted the team to look organised and professional when they arrived at a property, and not like each vehicle had been wrapped by a different shop.

Because plumbing vehicles pick up dirt, scuffs and minor bumps around building sites, we also planned the material use with maintenance in mind. The decals needed to stay readable after washing, rain and plenty of sun on the highway. That meant using clean panel breaks, strong contrast and correct surface prep from the start.

Brief, Constraints And Site Realities

The main brief was to create a repeatable fleet branding package that could be rolled out in stages without changing the look from one vehicle to the next. The client also wanted the bakkies to keep working during the rollout, so we had to schedule around live jobs and stagger the fitment dates. That is usually the only way to handle fleet work for a service business.

We also had a few practical constraints. Some vehicles were already fitted with roof racks, ladder holders and rear step bars, which meant the graphics had to avoid fasteners and wear points. A few bakkies had older paint in local repair areas, so surface checking mattered before any film went down. In Johannesburg, especially in Kya Sand and the surrounding routes, dust and heat can affect adhesion if prep is rushed.

  • Multiple vehicle types with different panel sizes and door layouts
  • Staggered installation around active callout schedules
  • Existing racks, steps and service equipment on several bakkies
  • Need for clear contact details and legible branding from a distance
  • Durability for sun, rain, dust and frequent washing

What We Supplied And Installed

We started with the artwork and fleet standard, then moved into production using the agreed logo placement, contact information and service messaging. The main treatment used high-visibility vinyl graphics with careful panel alignment so the message stayed readable on both long and short body styles. Where needed, we used partial wraps rather than full coverage, because that was the best fit for the working conditions and the budget.

Each vehicle was surface prepared properly before installation. That included cleaning, degreasing and checking edges, badges and fuel flap areas. The team then fitted the graphics with attention to seams and cut lines, so the final finish looked tidy and held up when the vehicle was washed. Tshepo handled the material planning for any tinted sections and protective film requests, while Johan led the fitting work on the main units.

  • Fleet brand standard for consistent logo placement
  • Vinyl installation on doors, tailgates and quarter panels
  • Surface preparation for used fleet vehicles
  • Window tinting on selected callout bakkies where permitted
  • Interior trim wrap updates on worn touch points
  • Wheel refurbishment on a few high-mileage units

We also set up the graphics so future vehicle additions could be matched without reworking the whole layout. That matters for growing fleets, because the best branding system is one that still looks right when you add the next bakkie six months later.

Timeline From Approval To Rollout

The project ran over three weeks from final sign-off to the last fitment. Week one covered measurement, artwork adjustment and material planning. Week two was production and prep for the first batch of vehicles, with the remaining units scheduled around the client’s operating hours. Week three covered installation, quality checks and handover notes for aftercare.

Because the fleet needed to stay available, we worked in batches rather than taking everything off the road at once. That reduced downtime and let the client keep responding to callouts in Randburg, Sandton, Fourways and nearby areas. It also gave the team time to review each vehicle before the next one went in, which helps keep a fleet job consistent from start to finish.

Where the bakkies already had minor stone chips or wear on the bodywork, we advised on what could be wrapped cleanly and what should be left alone until a later repair. That sort of honest call saves time and avoids lifting edges later on.

Results On The Road And On Site

Once the fleet was out working again, the difference was immediate. The vehicles were easier to spot in traffic, the contact details read clearly, and the overall look matched the way the client wanted to be seen in the market. The roll-out also gave the business a more settled appearance when arriving at estates and residential jobs, which helps with trust at the gate.

The finish has to do two jobs for a plumbing fleet. It must advertise the service and it must survive worksite life. The result here did both. The graphics stood up well to washing, regular use and the harsh northern sun, and the chosen materials allowed the vehicles to stay clean-looking without constant touch-ups. There was also less confusion for customers phoning in, because the same phone number and branding appeared across the whole fleet.

  • Clearer brand recognition on the road
  • More professional first impression at residential and estate jobs
  • Consistent look across multiple bakkies and body types
  • Reduced confusion between vehicles in the fleet
  • Easy to update when new units join the fleet

What We Would Do Again

If we were rolling out the same fleet again, we would follow the same process: one master layout, staged fitment, and proper prep before every install. For service businesses, that approach is usually the safest way to manage cost, keep vehicles earning and avoid inconsistent branding. It also works well when the fleet grows over time, because the standard is already in place.

For a Randburg-based plumbing team, the practical takeaway was simple. Good fleet branding does not need to be flashy, it needs to be readable, clean and tough enough for daily use. That is the bit we paid closest attention to on this project, and it is the reason the rollout suited the way the client works across northern Johannesburg.

If the fleet expands again, we would repeat the same artwork controls, measure the new units against the existing template, and fit in batches to keep operations moving. That keeps the brand tight, even when the vehicles are not the same model or year.

Questions we get asked

Did you wrap every vehicle the same way?

We used one fleet standard, then adjusted the layout for each bakkie so the branding stayed consistent across different body styles and fittings.

How long did the fleet spend off the road?

The rollout was done in stages over three weeks, so the client could keep vehicles working while each unit came in for prep and installation.

Can this kind of branding handle daily site use?

Yes. With proper surface prep, correct material choice and clean edge work, fleet graphics can handle regular washing, sun and the wear that comes with service work.
